Spatial Bisection

The new headquarters of an expanding company whose objective is related to circular economy solutions and environmental consciousness, are designed on the 7th floor of a LEED Gold Certified building complex. The floor, with total area of 1100 sqm, has two significant features: a rather elongated shape (with average length 52 m and width 20 m) and a slanted main facade. The main objectives of the intervention were to fully satisfy the needs of the company for its new HQ, the demarcation of three executive offices and reassuring a capacity of total 100 workstations altogether in the open plan area, enclosed offices and three meeting rooms. In addition, careful selection of materials was crucial to fully comply with the LEED standard's guidelines. Finally, in the early stages of the design process, it seemed important to avoid in any possible way the uniformity and standardization often seen in open space workplaces, and to ensure favorable working conditions through visual and acoustic comfort, privacy, and exploitation of natural light. An answer to those requirements was given through a perpendicular axis to the slanted façade with the intention to change the angle of the grid in the layout, aiming on the one hand to avoid deficient spaces within the enclosed offices, and on the other hand to create an intriguing, yet organized, complexity within the open space. This diagonal axis that bisects the layout, became a single continuous spatial line and eventually, the basic axis of the synthesis. Around this, administration offices are, and the main meeting room contains one side and the two meeting rooms, the rest of the enclosed offices and the open space the other. This bisection is reflected also in the final design of the false ceiling and lighting. The new axis separates the false ceiling from the exposed one where the HVAC equipment is left exposed and became part of the design. Regarding artificial lights, the bisection is defined by a black suspended lighting track. Thus, the meeting rooms in the center of the layout, close to the reception desk, as glass boxes take advantage of all the natural light and remain sound isolated and private with the electrically operated sound absorbing curtains. The administration offices are organized in full privacy, while the rest of the enclosed offices are attached to the facades and designed as “boxes in a box”. This is how the open space appears to be spread in between the offices, constituting “small entities within space”. The interior architectural study included the overall design of all enclosed offices and open space, coordination of the other studies required (MEP and Lighting), bespoke furniture and the selection of the decorative ones. An extensive search of materials was another important step in the design process. Close to the firm’s mentality, and LEED requirements, the majority of materials used on this project have recycled content and is fully recyclable, minimizing the environmental impact and leading to a new way of designing towards sustainability.

Η νέα έδρα εταιρείας η οποία δραστηριοποιείται στον χώρο της κυκλικής οικονομίας και ανακύκλωσης, σχεδιάστηκε στον 7ο όροφο κτιρίου γραφείων με πιστοποίηση LEED Gold. Πρόκειται για έναν όροφο συνολικού εμβαδού 1100 τ.μ. με δύο χαρακτηριστικά, την στενόμακρη κάτοψη (μέσο μήκος 52 μ. και πλάτος 20 μ.), και την υπό κλίση της κύριας όψης. Στόχοι της πρότασης ήταν αρχικά, να καλυφθούν πλήρως οι ανάγκες της εταιρείας, όπως η σαφής οριοθέτηση των τριών γραφείων της διοίκησης και η εξασφάλιση 100 θέσεων εργασίας στο open plan, στα κλειστά γραφεία και στους τρεις χώρους συνεδριάσεων. Έπειτα, σε επίπεδο επιλογής υλικών ήταν απαιτούμενη η πλήρης συμμόρφωση με το πρότυπο LEED. Τέλος, από τα πρώτα στάδια του σχεδιασμού, ήταν ζητούμενα η αποφυγή της ομοιομορφίας και της τυποποίησης που συναντώνται συχνά σε χώρους εργασίας open space, και η εξασφάλιση ευνοϊκών εργασιακών συνθηκών μέσω οπτικής και ηχητικής άνεσης, ιδιωτικότητας και εκμετάλλευσης του φυσικού φωτός. Ως απάντηση των ζητουμένων, σχεδιάστηκε χάραξη κάθετη προς την υπό κλίση κύρια όψη, προκειμένου να στραφεί ο κάνναβος της κάτοψης, με στόχο αφενός να αποφευχθούν μη χρηστικοί χώροι εντός των κλειστών γραφείων, και αφετέρου να δημιουργηθεί μια ενδιαφέρουσα πολυπλοκότητα στο open space. Η διαγώνια χάραξη ως ο νέος άξονας έγινε μια συνεχόμενη γραμμή και αποτελεί τον κύριο συνθετικό άξονα γύρω από τον οποίο οργανώνονται από την μια πλευρά, οι χώροι της διοίκησης με τον μεγάλο συνεδριακό χώρο και από την άλλη πλευρά τα υπόλοιπα κλειστά γραφεία, δύο μικρότεροι χώροι συνεδριάσεων και το open space. Ό νέος άξονας αποτυπώνεται επίσης στο επίπεδο της οροφής αλλά και στο φωτισμό, όπου συναντώνται η κλειστή επένδυση της οροφής με την ανοιχτή οροφή και ορατό τον ΗΜ εξοπλισμό, ο οποίος μελετήθηκε ως αναπόσπαστο μέρος της σύνθεσης. Η κρεμαστή ράγα, η οποία ακολουθεί τον άξονα και διαφοροποιείται χρωματικά λειτουργεί ως γενικός φωτισμός του χώρου, έμμεσος και άμεσος. Οι χώροι συνεδριάσεων, κεντρικά της κάτοψης και δίπλα στην υποδοχή, ως διαφανείς όγκοι εξασφαλίζουν άπλετο φυσικό φως, οι οποίοι μπορούν να απομονώνονται με ηλεκτροκίνητα ηχοαπορροφητικά υφάσματα, που δημιουργούν συνθήκες ακουστικής άνεσης και ιδιωτικότητας. Τα γραφεία της διοίκησης περιορίζονται στο τμήμα της κάτοψης με την μέγιστη οπτική απομόνωση, ενώ τα υπόλοιπα κλειστά γραφεία εφάπτονται στις όψεις περιμετρικά ως ελεύθερα «κουτιά μέσα σε κουτί». Έτσι επιτυγχάνεται οι θέσεις εργασίας στο open space να διαχέονται ανάμεσα στα κλειστά γραφεία δημιουργώντας «επιμέρους χωρικότητες μέσα στον χώρο». Η αρχιτεκτονική μελέτη εσωτερικού χώρου, περιλάμβανε τον συνολικό σχεδιασμό όλων των ελεύθερων ανοιχτών αλλά και κλειστών γραφείων, τον συντονισμό των λοιπών μελετών (ΗΜ και Φωτισμού), τον πλήρη σχεδιασμό των σταθερών επίπλων καθώς και την επιλογή του κινητού εξοπλισμού. Με γνώμονα την φιλοσοφία της εταιρείας, και το πρότυπο LEED, στο μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό τους τα υλικά που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στο έργο είναι πιστοποιημένα προϊόντα ανακύκλωσης και πλήρως ανακυκλώσιμα, ελαχιστοποιώντας το ενεργειακό αποτύπωμα και δείχνοντας μια νέα σχεδιαστική οδό, προς την βιωσιμότητα.
